About Barleycorn House Bed and Breakfast and The Barleycorn Inn

The Current Owners and The History of the Inn

Barleycorn House bed and breakfast, Shillingford, Devon

Barleycorn Bed and Breakfast is a family run B&B in a former coaching inn, situated in Shillingford, near Tiverton, Devon.

The current owners, Bill and Veronica Parry, moved to Devon from Surrey in 2006 to re-open the bed and breakfast, which the former owners had turned into private accommodation earlier in the decade. Prior to their purchase of the building it was a country pub renowned for it's food.

The Barleycorn Inn is believed to date back to the middle of the 19th century, when a turnpike road was built towards Bampton between 1826 and 1830. It is believed that Barleycorn Inn was built between 1830 and 1840 to serve passing trade on this road.

The road later became the B3227, joining Taunton and Bampton and is referred to by locals as the Wiveliscombe Road. Traffic levels on B3227 fell after an A road was built to Tiverton to the south, restoring peace to this area of the Exe Valley.

The inn was well known locally for it’s food (apparently the steaks were especially good) and many locals of Shillingford, Tiverton and the surrounding areas were sad to see it closed by the former owners early in the 21st century. The current owners acquired "The Barleycorn House", as it was then known, in 2006 and re-opened it as a bed and breakfast.

Although no longer an inn, the building has many of the features of the original pub, including wooden beams, stone floors and a bar area (now in the owner’s private lounge). At some time in the past the inn was joined to the Barleycorn Cottage next door to create one building; the cottage door now provides a front door for guests (on the left of the photo above).
